Theatre has long been the training ground for many iconic Bollywood actors, helping them hone their craft before their big-screen debuts. This World Theatre Day, we celebrate five talented stars who started on stage and went on to conquer Indian cinema.

Boman Irani: From Theatre to Versatile Screen Performer

Before becoming a beloved Bollywood actor and director, Boman Irani was deeply immersed in theatre, where he performed in several stage productions. His Bollywood journey began with Josh (2000), but he gained widespread fame with Munnabhai MBBS (2003). Today, Boman is known for stellar performances in 3 Idiots and Dunki and has ventured into directing with The Mehta Boys.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui: From Theatre Roots to Bollywood Stardom

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s acting career started in theatre, where he performed with NSD’s Repertory Company. His Bollywood debut came with a small role in Sarfarosh (1999), but his breakthrough arrived with Gangs of Wasseypur (2012). Known for his intense acting, Nawazuddin continues to shine in acclaimed projects like Manto and Sacred Games.

Shah Rukh Khan: From Stage Actor to Global Superstar

Before earning the title of Bollywood’s “King Khan,” Shah Rukh Khan sharpened his acting skills in Delhi’s theatre circuit, performing under Barry John’s mentorship. He made his Bollywood debut with Deewana (1992) and rose to global fame with blockbusters like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Pathaan, and Dunki.

Paresh Rawal: The Theatre Legend Turned Bollywood Icon

Paresh Rawal made a name for himself in Gujarati theatre before stepping into Bollywood. His debut came with Holi (1984), but it was Naam (1986) that earned him recognition. Known for both comedic and serious roles, Paresh has delivered unforgettable performances in films like Hera Pheri, Oh My God, and Sardar.

Manoj Bajpayee: From NSD to Iconic Bollywood Roles

Manoj Bajpayee began his acting journey in Delhi’s theatre scene and later trained at the National School of Drama. His Bollywood debut was in Bandit Queen (1994), but he gained fame with his iconic role as Bhiku Mhatre in Satya (1998). Today, he is celebrated for powerhouse performances in Aligarh, Gangs of Wasseypur, and The Family Man.

From theatre stages to blockbuster films, these stars prove that strong acting foundations often begin under the spotlight of live performances. This World Theatre Day, let’s honor the art form that nurtured some of Bollywood’s greatest talents!
