The trailer for 2020 Delhi, India’s first single-shot, full-length Hindi feature film, has been released. Set against the backdrop of the 2020 Delhi riots, the film delves into the communal tensions, political conspiracies, and the struggles of ordinary citizens caught in extraordinary circumstances.
2020 Delhi portrays how the anti-CAA protests, which began in Shaheen Bagh, escalated into the devastating riots that coincided with U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to India for the “Namaste Trump” event. The narrative unfolds over a single day—February 24, 2020—a day marked by stark contrasts: on one side, a high-profile international visit; on the other, a city engulfed in violence, resulting in the loss of 53 lives.
Filmmaker Devendra Maalviya brings these harsh realities to the forefront, depicting one of India’s most polarizing events in recent history. Speaking about the challenges of shooting the film in a single-shot format, Maalviya shared, “Capturing the intensity of such devastating riots and arson in a single shot was a massive challenge. This film proves that when creativity and determination come together, a filmmaker can achieve even the most ambitious goals.”
The film also highlights the struggles of Hindu minorities in neighboring countries, addressing issues such as rape, murder, forced conversions, and slavery. It portrays the plight of individuals dreaming of escaping to India for safety. According to Maalviya, the single-shot format demanded flawless synchronization of the screenplay, choreography, acting, lighting, and set design. “There’s no room for error in a single-shot film, which is what makes it such a unique cinematic experience. It immerses the audience, making them feel like they’re part of the story,” he added.
Maalviya’s journey in cinema is a testament to resilience and determination. After facing challenges and rejections in Mumbai as an aspiring actor, he chose to break away from traditional industry norms and pave his own path. With 2020 Delhi, he has proven that impactful cinema can thrive without the backing of major studios or established networks. His work stands as a beacon of inspiration for independent filmmakers across India.
The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Brijendra Kala, Samar Jai Singh, Sidharth Bhardwaj, Bhoopesh Singh, Chetan Sharma, and Akash Arora, whose powerful performances bring the story to life.
