New Delhi: During the monsoon season, farmers face a high risk of crop damage. Not everyone can afford private crop insurance, so the government has introduced a special insurance scheme for farmers — the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). This scheme provides insurance coverage specifically against crop loss.

Let’s understand what this scheme covers, the benefits it offers, and how you can apply.

Benefits of the Scheme

Like all insurance plans, PMFBY requires farmers to pay a small premium to get coverage. Under the scheme:

  • Coverage is provided from sowing to harvesting.

  • Losses caused by events like excess rainfall, drought, pest attacks, or any other reason for crop damage are covered.

  • For Kharif crops, farmers pay only 2% of the premium, with the government covering the rest.

  • Farmers in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and the North-Eastern states can avail the benefits without paying any premium.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the official PMFBY website.

  2. Fill in the application form carefully with all required details.

  3. Provide accurate information about your crop and land.

  4. You can check your exact premium amount using the Insurance Premium Calculator on the website.

Under this scheme, farmers pay just 2% of the premium, while the government contributes 10%.
